A welcome from our pastor

Consider yourself officially invited: the best way to get to know a church community is in worship on a Sunday! Click here for our current worship page (times, livestream, etc.).

There's a place for you here: in worship, serving together, learning and growing faith, sharing as community. We're a small but vibrant community, enriched by the ever-changing neighborhood and newcomers - maybe you!

If you’re considering visiting or checking out churches online, I know you’re looking for something real.  Come visit and see if GLC is a fit for you. We’re a relatively small community with a big open mind and a real opportunity for serving, sharing, and connecting with others. GLC has been on this corner of Wisconsin and Volta for almost 250 years and has a rich history. In each era we’ve seen how God leads us to stay rooted in and yet grow and adapt to authentically reflect a living faith. This is truly an incredible congregation – people with diverse stories and backgrounds; we come with our doubts, our real lives, and our perspectives, to share in community here. Our "we" includes people who are single, families with kids, young adults, retirees, LGBTQIA+, and folks new to the US, Lutheranism, or Christianity.

There’s a place for you here.  But as Levar Burton said on Reading Rainbow, “don’t take my word for it!” Come to worship. Check out GLC. See where God is calling you – ask questions, challenge us, and consider how you might be a part of what God is doing in this community.  I’ll even buy you a cup of coffee/wine/beer to talk about it.  Come and see!

What to expect

Helpful info for your first visit

  • Getting here: We're right in the heart of Georgetown on busy Wisconsin Avenue, convenient to many bus lines (D2, D6, G2, 31, 33, Circulator), and a pleasant walk from either the Dupont or Foggy Bottom metro stations.
  • Parking & accessibility: We do not have a parking lot. Street parking on neighborhood streets is free and more available on Sunday mornings. Our building is not fully wheelchair/mobility accessible, but our sanctuary and church spaces are all on one flat level once you get in the one step into the church - and we'll be eliminating that with a ramp to the front door this year!
  • Come as you are: Our worship is traditional, but not stuffy. People dress comfortably, in everything from jeans/sandals to more dressy attire.
  • Kids/Nursery: We love kids and think it's important to welcome them in worship! In our sanctuary there's a little kids' space at the front right with soft toys, coloring, books, and kids-size furnishings. Kids' bulletins are also available each Sunday. We do not have a staffed nursery, but the nursery room is available and equipped for play, rockers for nursing, and a livestream to keep connected to worship.
  • Our worship includes speaking and praying together, from a provided bulletin (program) that follows a set structure. Our 8:30 service, which lasts about 30 minutes, is spoken only - the 10:00 service, about an hour, includes instrumental music, congregational singing led by organ/piano, and often special music by our choir/others.
  • Holy communion is offered at every Sunday worship service. This is God's table - where all are welcome to receive God's real presence in the bread and wine/juice. We like to say all are welcome, but none should feel forced - so you're always welcome to receive, but you also won't be judged or feel out of place for choosing not to do so.
